Examinations & Grading System
Examinations must be conducted when the schedule allows. In the case of compassionate reasons, the exams officer may allow the absence of the student. In the following academic year, students may retake a course that they took previously to replace a failed or low grade course. The conventional grading system used by Nigerian tertiary institutions is known as the 5- point grading scale. They use various grades, such as first class, second class, third class, and pass. EIBCS uses the same 5-point Grading scale.
Examinations & Grading System
Percentage Score (%) | Letter Grade | Grade Point | Cumulative Grade Point Average | Class of Degree (Honours) | Post- Graduate Honours |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
70-100 | A | 5 | 4.5-5.00 | First Class | Distinction |
60-69 | B | 4 | 3.5-4.4 | Second Class Upper | Merit |
50-59 | C | 3 | 2.5-3.4 | Second Class Lower | Pass |
45-49 | D | 2 | 1.5-2.4 | Third Class | Fail |
40-44 | E | 1 | 1.0-1.4 | Pass | Fail |
0-39 | F | 0 | 0-0.9 | Fail | Fail |
The American grading system is used by EIBCS, as we are affiliated with a Christian university in the US. The 4-point system is shown below.
The American Grading System
Letter Grade | Percentage | Grade Point | Class of Degree |
---|---|---|---|
A | 90-100% | 4.0 | Excellent |
B | 80-89% | 3.0 | Very Good |
C | 70-79% | 2.0 | Good |
D | 60-69% | 1.0 | Pass |
F | 0-59% | 0.0 | Fail |
Most of the courses in a semester are 4 credit hours, and students are expected to
attend all of the lectures and practicals. A 75% attendance rate is required for most
courses, and those who are absent for more than 2 weeks may be required to forfeit
their classes. Class attendance is recorded during the first week of classes.
Full-time undergraduate students are required to have at least 28 credits per semester.
For graduate and postgraduate programs, the minimum is 37 and 16 respectively.
In addition to regular classes, students also have 8 weeks of practicum or internship.
Orientation is usually held the first week in April, followed by classes in the fourth week.
For the second semester, students start their studies in the second week of October.
During the third week of August, students start their practicum, while in the fourth
week of October, they complete their work. For the Christmas break, they have 3 weeks
left.
The academic year ends by the first week of April, and the new one begins by the fourth
week of April. Orientation is held the first week of April. After that, classes start in the
fourth week. During the third week of August, students start their practicum, while in
the second week of October, they complete their work.
To receive their awards, students must demonstrate their competency by preparing a
scholarly work that has been approved by the seminary’s research committee. This work
must follow the guidelines for educational research. Students must secure permission
from the seminary to publish their work.
Students who wish to graduate from a seminary program must first submit their
Dissertation, thesis or project and complete all of their course requirements. The
ceremony, which usually takes place on the third Saturday in April, is mandatory.
A student’s academic performance is not enough to guarantee that he or she will
graduate. A student must also be considered worthy of being considered for graduation.
At every graduation ceremony, the Registrar or the Provost will use the academic ethos to
describe the qualities that make a student worthy of being considered for the degree.
They will also invoke the person’s character and academic achievements when making
the decision to award the degree.
From the student’s initial phase to the end of his or her academic career, the character
and learning of a person are two of the most important factors that determine whether
or not a student will be considered for graduation.
Through the field education program, students are introduced to the practicum
experience, which is a supervised and evaluated program. It is designed to develop their
ability to apply classroom learning in real-world settings.
The goal of the field education program is to provide participants with the necessary skills
and knowledge to carry out their duties in the ministry. It is designed to develop their
attitudes toward their profession through a combination of theory and practice.
The field education programs help students develop their personal and intellectual
growth. Through the program, they can also become more reflective practitioners.
A student who fails to meet the academic standards of the institution is considered to
have been placed on probation. This type of discipline is given to those who maintain a
grade point average of less than 1.00.
The goal of EIBCS is to prepare all of its holy and whole leaders. This includes personal
and spiritual formation. If students fail to make adequate progress in these areas, they
may be placed on probation or ordered to follow a development plan.
The EIBCS can suspend, expel, or put a student on probation if their academic standing,
conduct, or financial obligations are not satisfactory.
Some of the actions that the committee can take include: a temporary suspension,
indefinite suspension, or removal of scholarship assistance.
Any student can request a review of the Disciplinary Committee’s decision through the
Registrar’s office. The decision will be the Registrar’s decision, and it will either support
or overturn the committee’s decision. Once the final decision is made, no further appeals
or review will be allowed.
In some cases, students who have not yet met the admission requirements may be
admitted into EIBCS. However, in order to be considered for admission, the student must
have the necessary educational attainments.
No degree or diploma certificate will be given to a student who has not met the
requirements of the program he or she is enrolled into.
Transcript, Transfer Of Credits And Change Of Program
To have their transcripts sent to other institutions or schools, students must make a
request in writing to the academic registry’s division. They will then be charged for
postage and administrative expenses.
Students may transfer credits from another theological institution to EIBCS. The student’s
academic performance and previous record are evaluated to determine if they can study
at the level they transferred.
Before students can start taking classes at EIBCS, they must first be officially accepted into
the program they are transferring to.
Students can change their program of study if their reason for doing so is deemed to be
justified. However, before they can switch from one program to another, they must first
meet the requirements of the new one.
The graduation honors of students of EIBCS are determined based on the following
criteria. Students who have committed academic dishonesty are not allowed to receive
honors. Those who complete their programs with scholastic honors are regarded as honor
graduates.
i. CGPA: 4.00 – 5.00 = Summa Cum Laude
ii. CGPA: 380 – 3.99 = Magna Cum Laude
iii. CGPA: 350 – 3.79 = Cum Laude
Honorary Doctoral Degrees (Honoris Causa)
The EIBCS also recognizes the years of service that the candidate has dedicated to the
Lord and the significant contributions that they have made to the church. It also
recognizes the achievements of individuals who have actively participated in Christina
service.
An honorary degree is a type of degree that a seminary or other awarding institution can
give to individuals. It does not require them to complete certain requirements such as
studying, residence, and carrying out examinations.
An honorary degree is usually given to someone who has not previously been associated
with academic instruction. To be considered for an award, a candidate must be at least 25
years old and have at least 10 years of active Christian service. An exception may be made
in certain years depending on the candidate's notable achievements.

Withdrawal
A student with a grade point average below 1.00 who has been on probation for a certain
period of time will be required to withdraw from seminary. In order to minimize the
waste of human resources, this student may be allowed to transfer to another program or
drop out altogether.
Students who wish to withdraw from the seminary must first contact the Office of
academic advisors. They must then complete a petition form to request refunds. If a
student would like to re-enter the program, they must first send a letter to the Office of
admissions. This letter should provide a list of the student's current goals and how the
seminary fits into these goals.
